HIP REPLACEMENT
Total Hip Arthroplasty provides consistent and excellent results in the treatment of painful arthritis of the hip joint. In terms of improvement in Quality of life, there are few procedures across all medical specialties that can rival it.
With improving technology, most importantly improved polyethylene inserts, a hip replacement not only provides excellent pain relief but also longevity, as demonstrated in the New Zealand Joint registry.
There are multiple surgical approaches, most commonly the posterior approach but anterior approach is gaining more popularity. The long term results are no different between these two approaches.
I primarily use the posterior approach but am familiarising myself with the anterior approach.
